Alex Popovics announces retirement plans

Dr. Alex Popovics, vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Development, has announced his plan to retire, effective Oct. 20, following more than 10 years of service to Hudson Valley Community College.

Please join me in thanking Alex for all he’s done to advance the college and its mission, and wishing him well in the years ahead. He and his wife, Joanne, plan to relocate to South Carolina.

Here at Hudson Valley, Dr. Popovics’s responsibilities are oversight of enrollment and student services, including admissions, athletics, the registrar, student activities and several student support offices. Plus, he serves as president of the Faculty Student Association and supervises the Office of Communications and Marketing. He’s also the Title IX officer, ensuring compliance with federal guidelines for the prevention of sexual discrimination, harassment and assault.

His priority always is what’s best for our students and to that end he restructured student services to create the Center for Careers and Transfer, the Wellness Center, where students can find help with both physical and mental health issues, and the Center for Access and Assistive Technology. Services for both physical and learning disabilities are merged at CAAT. He is a strong proponent of New Student Orientation.

Five athletic teams for a total of 18 were added during Alex’s tenure, and the college now offers Welcome Week — special events at the start of each semester, and Pumpkinpalooza, a free Halloween event for the community that attracts hundreds of families each year.

Dr. Popovics spearheaded the campaign to build the $4.5 million Outdoor Athletic Complex and, as FSA president, helped secure funding for the parking garage and major renovations in the Fitzgibbons Health Technologies Center. He oversaw the installation of 12 digital monitors to enhance on-campus communications, the implementation of the college’s re-branding a few years ago, and coordinated projects to rewrite bylaws for the FSA and Student Senate.
